Avoid large bold patterns as they often dominate the photograph and detract attention from your beautiful face.

Usually, subtle smaller patterns work best. Flannels or a light floral print are great when they complement the location. But less is definitely more with this one, try to limit yourself to one pattern at a time.

Staying within or as close as possible to this color scheme will strengthen the images and hold them together as an overall theme.

These colors, the ones that look incredible together, are called complementary colors. They complement each other and create a visual harmony. They're salt and pepper, Bonnie and Clyde, peanut butter and jelly. Complementary colors sit across from one another on the color wheel (i.e. blue and orange/pink, red and green, yellow and purple/blue).

Props

Go for the subtle things that accentuate your personality and help to tell a story about your life. Think pets, an instrument, surfboards, an umbrella, a basketball, or flowers. Avoid the cheese as much as possible, but if you make cheese, bring it!

Don’t worry about sounding professional. Sounds like you. There are over 1.5 billion websites out there, but your story is what’s going to separate this one from the rest.

Makeup & Hair

I would suggest cultivating a bit of the French je ne sais quoi that balances elegance and ease. I want you to look like you. Do whatever you need to do to feel confident and beautiful and match the vibe you are going for.

As for hair... it's the same concept as the nails. If you want to get those roots done before your shoot, do it! Photoshop is there, but it's not a cure-all for hair you weren't happy with in the first place.

Recap

  • Choose clothes, accessories, and props with a clear plan on how your photos will be used or displayed.

  • Dress for the vibe (elegant or casual or in-between).

  • Complement - don't match (unless it's intentional).

  • Wear something that you feel like yourself in.

  • Choose colors and fibers that make sense with the overall plan for the images.

  • Avoid large prints, logos, overly baggy or drapey clothes, or patterns (unless they help tell your story).

  • Bring accessories that personalize your images
